Biography
Mary Lia Reiter is a Professor of Sociology and Criminology in the Social and Behavioral Sciences Department at Columbus State Community College, where she has taught since 2001. She is also the AI Faculty Fellow at CSCC, an institutional role focused on leading the college’s AI initiatives for faculty, staff, and students at every level. At The Ohio State University, she served as a Lecturer in the Department of Sociology.
Her scholarly work sits at the intersection of law, society, and human behavior. She specializes in law and society, forensic criminology, deviant subcultures, and the sociology of law, areas she has studied, taught, and written about throughout her career. Her MA thesis at Ohio State examined the determinants of crime completion and injury severity among victims of violent crime.
In recent years, her attention has expanded significantly toward the pedagogical and institutional dimensions of artificial intelligence in higher education. In her role as AI Faculty Fellow, she designs and facilitates professional development for CSCC faculty and staff, leads student-facing AI literacy initiatives, and develops policy frameworks for responsible AI use. She builds tools as well as curricula, including Digiasati.com, a free resource hub for higher education educators navigating AI adoption.
She has extensive experience in online and distance learning course development, instructional technology, and assessment design. She holds a Juris Doctor and a Master of Arts in Criminology, both from The Ohio State University, and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing from Texas A&M University.
