The Bem Sex-Role Inventory (BSRI) was developed by psychologist Sandra Bem and published in 1974. It introduced the concept of psychological androgyny, or the idea that masculinity and femininity are independent dimensions rather than opposite ends of a single scale. The survey instrument asks respondents to rate themselves on 60 personality characteristics.

Masculinity and Femininity are scored as independent dimensions. Each is the average of its 20 items on the 1–7 scale consistent with Bem's theory that they aren't opposite ends of one continuum. Classification uses the scale midpoint (4.0) as a simplified cut point: high on both = Androgynous, high Masculinity only = Masculine, high Femininity only = Feminine, low on both = Undifferentiated. This is an approximation for self-reflection, not Bem's original median-split norms from a reference sample.
